The latest in the fight to find an effective nail fungus treatment comes from a company called Barrier Therapeutics. They are a pharmaceutical company involved in developing and marketing dermatology products, and have announced the completion of phase 3 clinical study of Hyphanox, a patented product of the oral antifungal agent itraconazole. This allows the company to apply for patent enrollment for the treatment of Onychomycosis, or nail fungus (both fingernails and toenails) using Hyphanox. Itraconazole is currently marketed as Sporanox by Janssen Pharmaceutica; Barrier Therapeutics is one step closer to competing with Sporanox.
Nail fungus is a persistent tiny organism (Tinea Unguium) that can invade the nail bed (that space between the nail and the skin) when exposed to warm, wet, damp, dark environments, where these organisms thrive. The disease is called onychomycosis (OM), and can be very difficult to eradicate. It usually begins as a white or yellow spot on the nail, progressing to discoloration, distorted shape of the nail, thickening, and finally crumbling of the nail. It can cause not only cosmetic headaches to the sufferer, but also irritation, pain, and possibly further intrusion into the body with damaging consequences. In those with depressed circulatory systems (diabetics, leukemia, etc.), any minor infection can lead to a serious condition needing immediate attention. Both oral and topical drugs are currently available to combat OM, which is estimated to affect some 35 million Americans. Topical creams are said to be for minor infections and prove to be widely ineffective in permanently curing the area of the fungi; these creams typically give temporary relief, if at all.
Nail Treatment
The more serious infections are left to the oral medications: Itraconzole (Sporanox); Fluconazole (Diflucan); and Terbinafine (Lamisil). Each of these medications help a new nail grow free of infection, eventually replacing the infected portion of your nail. Treatment can last for 6 to 12 weeks, although complete elimination may take weeks longer. These are the "heavy artillery" in the fight against OM. They purport to have significant success in killing off this type of fungus and returning the nail to normality.
The problem is this: They are costly, and they can have debilitating side effects. Among these are: elevated alanine aminotransferase levels (affecting liver function); diarrhea; nausea; vomiting; abdominal pain; yellow eyes; dark urine; loss of appetite; yellow skin (jaundice); itching; and pale stool. Not to mention a "small but real risk of developing" congestive heart failure. So, it is fair to ask yourself: "At what price do I want to attack OM in my nails?" I mean, you might alleviate your nail fungus, but will the rest of your body thank you for giving it adverse side effects? Is there an alternative? Thankfully, there is. Natural remedies, which have always been with man, do come to the rescue. They are simple, cost effective, pain-free, and avoid the side effects mentioned above. Perhaps the best remedy involves things found in most homes, not expensive drugs.
So before you go buy Sporanox, or wait for Hyphanox to come out, consider a natural, alternative, nail fungus treatment using safe and healthy household items. Be cautious; be wise about what you put in your body. Fighting poison with poison will only hurt your feet more!
