I've pretty much had bad luck with nail infections for most of my youth. My high school football days produced a bad case of athlete's foot and now in my middle age years, I developed yellow toenails. The official term for yellow toenails is onychomycosis, more commonly known as toenail fungus. This is a problem that many people seem to have. It is far more common in toenails than fingernails because the fungus can find the right temperature and moistness in the enclosed feet and so has a greater chance of survival.
Once the nail fungus takes hold, you'll begin to see a gradual change in the look and feel of the nail and in many cases you'll be able to smell the difference. As the fungus develops, the infected nail may look yellowish or brownish. Depending on the severity some may even turn dark brown or black. The affected nail begins to get flaky, crack or chip easily and become very brittle. In some extreme cases the toenail becomes so thick that it makes walking painful. Yellow toenails can begin to separate from the nail bed if left untreated.

The first thing you want to do is protect your feet by adopting what I call defensive hygiene. Get yourself socks made with synthetic fiber that will quickly remove perspiration and moisture from your feet. This will avoid giving the fungus the right type of environment. Any tools that you used to work on your toenails or feet should be disinfected or thrown away. Avoid sharing any foot ware with others. Wash your feet and dry them properly every day. Be sure to dry your feet and use a cotton swab under your nails if possible. You want to avoid wearing any uncomfortable or tight fitting footwear.
My results were initially mixed when using various homemade methods to clear up the fungus. What worked for others may not necessarily work for you. Some treatments seem to affect the fungus, while others affected the toenail. If you are going to try a homemade remedy such as a vinegar soak, you'll need to be patient and try it consistently every day until you begin to see results. This may take up to 12 months. To be honest, some of the over-the-counter remedies were just as inconsistent. I will say though, there was one product that cleared up my toenail and removed the fungus; which I'm happy to say has not returned, I couldn't believe it worked as well as it did.
