Thick Discolored Toenails - Causes and Treatment

Nail Treatment

It's important to understand the causes of fungus. This is because you'll need to know how to further prevent the fungus once you've successfully treated it.

Toenail fungus is caused by a variety of factors but mainly it is caused by the toe being exposed to moisture. Toenail fungus has a tendency to grow in places such as public showers, pools, and gyms. Make sure you wear sandals around these places whenever possible. Also if you have sweaty shoes make sure you let them dry out before using again. If you sweat a lot be sure to buy thick absorbent socks. Try to wear shoes that do not fit too tightly either. Finally, toenail fungus might be caused by cutting the toenail too short causing minor cuts leaving the toe open to fungal attack.

Toenail Treatment

When dealing with thick discolored toenails its best to start treatment by taking a warm shower. This will allow the nail to absorb moisture. At this point you'll want to file the nail just a little. Be gentle and do not go overboard. Our goal here is to remove some of the surface of the nail so it can absorb treatment better. Next you'll want to dip your infected nails in beer for 30 minutes twice a day. Beer naturally fights fungus and I've seen amazing results with it. After your beer treatment I applied a natural topical treatment.

This combination of methods helped me to finally overcome my fungus. It took a little time and a bit of effort but was definitely worth the effort.
