The identifying characteristics of a nail fungus include: a thickened nail which may be difficult to trim; cloudy white, or yellow appearance; the nail itself becomes brittle, crumbly, flaky, chipped, and rough; the nail can separate from the nail bed; white or black spots which you cannot clean off; may have an odor; and little pus pockets may accumulate around them. These symptoms are used to determine if a fungus is present. If it is left untreated it could spread to other nails and you could lose the entire nail. It is best to set up an appointment to confirm the infection and then follow a toenail fungus treatment.
Risk Factors
Nail Treatment
Although anybody can develop the problem, certain factors seem to be more prevalent in its appearance. They include: diabetes, older in age, male, prolonged daily exposure to water, athletes foot, poor hygiene, nail trauma, walking barefoot in public places, diseases which hamper the immune system, cuts on toes of nails, and wearing socks or shoes that retain moisture. There are some of these factors, such as walking barefoot in public places, which you can and should prevent. Others, such as diabetes, are not under your direct control but you can take some preventative measures by paying extra attention to your feet.
Things to be Aware of about Treatments
When you have confirmed the problem you will be given a few treatments to select from. These options include pills, which are often used, but there are also nail varnishes or tea tree oils which can be used if it is mild. A nail fungus is a very difficult problem to treat. Do not expect it to go away instantly you will need to continue the course of action for weeks and possibly months to prevent its return.
Types of Treatments
A variety of therapy options are available. They include antifungal lacquers, oral medications, home remedies, and surgery. Fungal infections are difficult to treat and there is not currently a medication which eliminates the infection for every person. You may find that you need to try a few types before finding the one which is effective for your toes.
Determining which Medicine to Use
Anti-fungal lacquers are applied like a nail polish to the nail and surrounding skin. The built up layers are then removed with alcohol. Oral medications are prescribed when swelling, diabetes, or other pain and discomfort is present. Home remedies may or may not be effective depending on the correct use and validity of the product. Vicks Vaporub, tea tree oil, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, and Listerine are some of the products which allegedly work against the infection. When there is a severe amount of pain involved surgical removal of the nail and its plate may be used.
There are a variety of toenail fungus treatment options available. The best treatment is to prevent the infection though. Taking care of your feet through proper hygiene and foot wear will benefit you greatly. If you should show signs of an infection be sure to quickly schedule an appointment with your physician.
