Nail fungus is the most common cause of discolored, thick, and deformed toenails. Toenails are affected more often than fingernails because the fungi that cause this disease thrive in the dark, warm, moist environment that is found in our shoes. If left untreated, the entire nail may eventually become discolored, thick, flaky, detached from the underlying nail bed; and an accumulation of dead, white, dry material may form between the nail and underlying nail bed.
The infected toenails are usually not painful until the nail becomes so thick that it rubs against the toe box of the shoe then it will start hurting later on. The fungus causes the toenails to get flaked, brittle and chipped. They also start emitting a bad smell.
Nail Treatment
Nail fungus is a common ailment yet it can be very hard to cure. You have to be persistent when you are combating toe nail fungus.
In order to determine if you have nail fungus, you must make an appointment with a dermatologist. They will scrape your infected nail and submit it for microscopic examination.
The nail will be carefully examined with a microscope and, occasionally, cultured, to determine what type of fungus is growing in the nail.
Usually, nail fungus occurs when fungus enters the nail through a small trauma (cut or break) in the nail and usually doe's not caused by poor hygiene. It's comforting to realize that developing a nail fungus is not necessarily a reflection of our cleanliness
Nail fungus is very common, a little prevention can go a long way. The following common sense tips will greatly reduce the chances of getting finger nail or toenail fungus:
- Keep your nails cut straight across. Nails need to be kept properly trimmed. Do not cut them to short, or leave them too long.
If nails are hard to cut, soften by soaking in salt water (use one teaspoon per one gallon of water).
- Wear shoes that provide plenty of air and moisture exchange.
- Look for air-breather holes on the side, natural materials (plastic shoes do not allow air and moisture exchange) and a comfortable fit.
You can also sprinkle in some anti-bacterial foot powder in the shoe to further prevent infection.
- Choose socks that are made of pure 100% cotton, wool or silk to absorb moisture from your feet and provide good ventilation. Avoid synthetic socks such as nylon, because they don't allow the moisture to pass away from your skin.
- If your feet get wet, take off your shoes and sock and clean your feet, dry them and put them in a fresh pair of clean, dry, cotton socks.
- Wear protective shoes or sandals in pubic showers, pool areas and gyms.
- Avoid borrowing someone else's shoes or socks and don't share towels or washcloths with someone who might have toenail fungus.
- It is advised not to wear toenail polish because it can seal in fungus and further encourage it to grow.
- Keep your feet clean, and wash them regularly. Make sure to thoroughly dry them after washing.
- Be careful with artificial nails and be selective about choosing your manicurist, ask them how they sterilize their instruments.
- Dry your hands and feet thoroughly after bathing especially in between your fingers and toes. Fungi growth occurs mostly on damp areas.
